Manhattan Post Office partially reopens after June tornado

The U.S. Postal Service notified the village of Manhattan last week that P.O. box customers can begin to pick up their mail at the Manhattan post office starting this week.

The retail counter will not be open yet, but there will be 24-hour access to the P.O. boxes.

A tornado that touched down June 27 damaged the post office; neighbors said at the time the tornado damaged the post office’s roof. The storm also caused damage to a few houses in the village of about 7,000 residents. It even blew a metal shed from someone’s yard into power lines that cut power to several homes.

Manhattan is located in south central Will County about 10 miles southwest of Joliet.
